Sodium Extra on Forge and NeoForge

Loader slots with published Sodium Extra builds for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt and none for legacy Forge

"Sodium Extra Forge" is a common search, mostly from players with an existing Forge modpack. The answer depends on which Forge you mean, because NeoForge and the original Forge are now separate loaders.

Loader overview

Sodium Extra's Modrinth listing names Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt as supported loaders. The original Minecraft Forge is not on that list.

LoaderStatusNotes
FabricPublished buildsThe most common setup.
NeoForgePublished buildsSeparate jar files from the Fabric builds.
QuiltListedQuilt can load many Fabric mods.
Forge (legacy)No official buildNot listed by the developer.

Not every Minecraft version has a build for every loader. Filter the version list by both loader and game version before downloading.

Installing on NeoForge

  1. Install NeoForge for your Minecraft version and launch it once.
  2. Download the NeoForge build of Sodium for that version.
  3. Download the NeoForge build of Sodium Extra that lists the same game version.
  4. Place both jars in the instance's mods folder and launch.

The steps mirror the Fabric install guide; the difference is that every jar must be the NeoForge variant.

What about Forge?

There is no official Sodium Extra build for the original Forge loader. Over the years, community projects have ported Sodium-style rendering and options to Forge, but those are separate mods with their own authors, features and update schedules. They are not Sodium Extra, and this site does not cover or link to them.

If you play on Forge, your realistic choices are:

  • check whether your modpack has a NeoForge or Fabric edition,
  • move your setup to NeoForge if your other mods are available there,
  • or stay on Forge without Sodium Extra.
Never rename a Fabric or NeoForge jar to make it "work" on Forge. Loaders read metadata inside the file, so renaming changes nothing and can hide the real cause of a crash.

Quilt

Quilt is listed as a supported loader. If you use Quilt, follow the same version-matching rules and read the release page for any Quilt-specific notes.

Choosing a loader

Pick the loader your other mods need. Sodium Extra is a client-side addon, so it rarely decides the loader for a whole pack. Once you have chosen, the version guide helps you find a matching build.
