Choosing the right Sodium Extra version

Timeline of Minecraft versions each with a matching Sodium Extra build marker

Most Sodium Extra problems come down to versions. The mod is built against a specific Minecraft release and a specific Sodium release, so a build that works perfectly on one setup can crash another. This guide shows how to choose correctly.

Three versions to match

  1. Minecraft version – for example 1.20.1, 1.21.10 or a 26.x release.
  2. Sodium version – the Sodium Extra release lists which Sodium it expects.
  3. Loader – Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt, each with its own files.

Get all three right and the mod almost always loads on the first try.

Reading build names

Sodium Extra release tags combine the Minecraft version and the mod version. The tag behind the download on this site is mc26.2-0.9.3, which reads as "built for Minecraft 26.2, Sodium Extra version 0.9.3". Older tags follow the same pattern with older game versions.

The mod version number alone (0.9.3) does not tell you the game version. Always read the full tag or the "game versions" field on the release.

Minecraft changed its version numbering in 2026, moving from the 1.21.x style to year-based numbers such as 26.1. A build tagged for 26.x will not run on 1.21.x, and the reverse is also true.

Playing older versions like 1.20.1

Many modpacks still target 1.20.1. Sodium Extra builds have been published for older game versions, but older builds no longer receive updates and must be paired with the Sodium build from the same era.

  • Filter the release list by game version 1.20.1 and your loader.
  • Note which Sodium version that build expects, then download that Sodium build.
  • Do not mix a newer Sodium with an older Sodium Extra to "get the latest fixes"; the options screen they hook into changes between Sodium releases.

1.21.x and 26.x

The 1.21 line had many point releases, and a build for 1.21.1 is not automatically valid for 1.21.10 or 1.21.11. Look for a build that lists your exact point release. The same applies to the 26.x releases: 26.1, 26.1.2 and 26.2 are different targets.

If no build lists your exact version yet, the safest option is to wait or play the most recent version that does have a matching build.

Updating safely

  1. Back up your world and your config folder.
  2. Update Minecraft, the loader, Sodium and Sodium Extra together.
  3. Remove the old jars rather than leaving them beside the new ones.
  4. Launch once and open Video Settings to confirm everything loaded.

If something goes wrong, the crash fixes guide lists the usual causes in order.
